A black hole is a region of space with a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape. Any object enveloped by a black hole is drawn into a spiral process. As the object spirals, the closer it comes to an exit point. Its velocity intensifies to the speed of light. It is at this point that the mysterious processes of the black hole begin to occur. An event horizon occurs when an object reaches this exit point. For reasons we can only guess, because we will never see the other side of a black hole, it is left to the continuing research of astrophysics to solve this question. The new James Webb telescope has given us a good idea of the visibility of this mystery, though the material question may be solved. On the other hand, some quantum physicists have also posited the idea that having achieved the speed of light, the matter has become interdimensional. We might ask, how is a black hole formed? It is formed by the death of a very large star. When the star runs out of energy, it explodes at such a tremendous force, that it is followed by an implosion. This implosion creates a black hole.
These profound questions relate to the nature of space and time. As children, when we consider the universe we ask the obvious questions: What is the universe? Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Are we alone? What is space? What is time? These questions fill our intuitive imaginations with sound creations as composers. This is our way of responding to the questions above. Other artists respond through their own means of creative expression via written word, visual manifestation, choreography, or through the immediacy of the voices of the natural world. However artistic vision is expressed, it invariably has the result of elevating the very essence of life. This is the journey of Event Horizon.
This record was created during improvised sessions at Thome’s New York City home, overlooking the East River. The pair met in 1999 at SUNY Purchase where Thome was Moffa’s first music theory mentor. They found similar interests in visual art, and Thome introduced avant garde music to Moffa, who had only recently begun a journey in electronic music through DJing. After Moffa’s graduation in 2002, they became colleagues and collaborators. Moffa performed at Thome’s Mandala concert at the Rubin Museum of Art in 2009. Together they created Thome’s album Celestial Visions in 2020, “a cosmological sonic journey through the universe.”
